Spooky season has begun, which also means Stephen King comes from behind the clouds. Director Stanley Kubrick shakes hands with the novel by the King of Horror and creates a masterpiece of his own—or, as we’d call it some 45 years after its release: a true cult classic.

The Shining laid the groundwork for the horror-thriller genre.
“A masterpiece of modern horror.”

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is a writer struggling with writer’s block. When he’s hired as the caretaker of the prestigious Overlook Hotel, tucked away in the remote mountains of Colorado, he sees it as the perfect chance to find inspiration and finally finish his book. It also seems like an ideal retreat for him, his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd). In his arrogance, Jack dismisses the rumors of dark forces haunting the hotel, as well as the grim tale of the previous caretaker who lost his mind and brutally murdered his family.
