City inspiration: Your ideas for Brussels

Stadspiratie: Jouw ideeën voor Brussel

Author: Charlotte Moerman

The Brussels of tomorrow

You have until May 15 to share your thoughts on and for Brussels on Stadspiratie. Stadspiratie is a public participation project for the Flemish Community Commission’s (VGC) 2021–2025 multi-year plan. On the online platform, you can share suggestions and ideas to help shape the future of Brussels. Even as a young person or student, you’re a (temporary) resident of Brussels, so it’s important to share your ideas about the city.

The platform is clearly organized into seven themes, where you can easily share your ideas. Others can like and comment on your ideas. The different themes you can provide input on are: learning, growing up, getting involved, creating together, meeting people, healthy living in the city, and a final category for ideas that don’t fit into the previous themes.

Do you have a suggestion of your own? Don't hesitate—share your idea!

Need some inspiration?

Looking for some inspiration? We’ve already come across a few great ideas. For example, someone suggested introducing “living streets” in Brussels. These are car-free streets where Brussels residents without gardens can reclaim the outdoor space and where children can play safely outside. Someone else suggested expanding the existing Villo system to include children’s bikes, so that Brussels’ little ones can use it too. The idea of the “chat tree” was also mentioned; these are trees surrounded by large benches, turning them into gathering spots for the neighborhood.

Even if you're a young person or a student, you're (temporarily) a resident of Brussels, and it's important to share your ideas about the city.

Brussels days

To turn these ideas into more concrete plans, two “Brussels Days” will be organized. During the first Brussels Day on June 6, citizens and organizations will discuss the ideas that emerged through Stadspiratie. A number of suggestions will be developed into concrete (policy) proposals. On the second Brussels Day, we will explore which associations, organizations, neighborhoods, or citizens wish to help bring these ideas to life. Ultimately, these proposals will be incorporated into the 2021–2025 multi-year plan with the goal of making Brussels a better, more pleasant, and more engaged city.
